509 The Official Public Holiday For GE14

Malaysia’s Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has officially announced the coming 14th General Election (GE14) polling day falls on May 9, 2018 (Wednesday) is a national public holiday, allowing voters to fulfil their responsibilities as a citizen and for the future of the nation.

Following the widespread criticism over the Election Commission (EC) to fix the polling date on May 9, which falls on weekdays instead of weekends the Malaysia’s Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has decided to declare the polling day for GE14 as an additional national public holiday for the convenience of voters to taking their part in the coming general election.

However, the national public holiday for the GE14 is only applicable to Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia) & the Federal Territory of Labuan and the declaration was made accordance with Section 8 of the Holiday Act 1951. As for both Sabah & Sarawak, the PMO said the state governments need to declare their own holidays under the Holidays Ordinance of both states respectively.
